FutureLearn courses offer you a few different ways to reflect on your learning:
Quizzes
- Quizzes are designed to help you with the learning process.
- They don't count towards an overall course score.
- You can try each question as many times as you like.
Tests
- Tests are designed to assess what you’ve learned.
- They count towards your overall course score.
- You get three attempts at each question.
- Only learners who have upgraded can access tests - you can find out more about this in our article about upgrading.
If you fail to achieve a passing grade on a short course (including courses in an ExpertTrack), you will be able to retake your test 8 hours after your most recent attempt.
To do so please go to the Summary page of the test step, which is the final part of the test.
From there, click on the square labelled 'End' in the progress bar underneath the title of the test.
On that page, you should see the option to reset your score, which will then allow you to take the test again in 8 hours.
Here are some things to bear in mind about resetting a test score:
- You will only be able to reset a test score on a test on which you have scored less than 70%, as that is our minimum passing grade per test.
- There is no time limit on taking a course test.
Exercises
- Exercises are designed to let you put into practice some of what you've learned.
- They don't count towards your overall course score.
Assignments
- Assignments let you produce a slightly longer-form piece of work.
- They are reviewed by other learners.
- You'll be able to review another learner's work as well!
- Everyone who submits an assignment should receive at least one review. (The system is largely random, but sampled so that everyone should get at least one.)
- Learners who submit earlier are a little more likely to receive multiple reviews.
- Some reviews will be received later in the course, as learners join and study later.
- We can't edit your assignment after you submit it.
We recommend that your draft assignments outside FutureLearn and then paste them into the submission box, to avoid submitting them accidentally.
Peer graded assessments (ExpertTrack only)
Like assignments, peer graded assessments are long-form pieces of work that you submit for review by other learners. However, there are a few key differences:
- You must complete any peer graded assessments to receive a certificate.
- You must submit at least two reviews of other learners' assessments to receive a certificate.
- You must score at least 70% across all course assessments, including tests.
- You can edit your assignment for up to 10 minutes after submitting it.
Please note that we cannot guarantee a time-frame in which your peer-grade reviews will be completed on an ExpertTrack course. If you have completed all the courses in your ExpertTrack then we recommend cancelling your subscription to the ExpertTrack via your account area (further instructions available here) while you wait for your peers to complete their reviews.
Even if you cancel your subscription before your assignment is reviewed, you will receive a certificate as long as:
- You score at least 70% on your assignment
- You have completed all other requirements of the course, such as passing any other assessments and reviewing assignments by other learners
- You have met all the other eligibility criteria
Reporting a review
We know the vast majority of our learners work hard to make their reviews as useful and constructive as possible. If you feel that a review is inappropriate or breaks our Code of Conduct please report it using the flag icon so our moderators can take action.
